What is the Affiliate Development Program?

The Affiliate Development Program provides an affiliate with an opportunity to work with ASRT and ultimately become a stronger organization and meet the needs of its members. Each ASRT affiliate may apply for this program every year. Approximately 10 affiliates will be selected to participate in the program each ASRT fiscal year

What is the duration of the Affiliate Development Program?

The duration of the program is one fiscal year based on the ASRT’s fiscal year that runs from October 1 to September 30.

What is the program designed to do?

The program is designed to provide ASRT affiliates with customized support to strengthen the affiliate by providing guidance on important issues like recruitment and retention, infrastructure reinforcement or how to introduce an advocacy program.

What types of assistance can the ASRT provide through the program?

ASRT staff will work closely with affiliate leadership to identify areas for assistance. The focus of the program will be determined and a maximum of four areas of assistance can be selected based on the main initiative. The affiliate will choose from advocacy skills development, recruitment and retention, infrastructure assistance and Affiliate Financial Assistance Program support.

  1. Advocacy development assistance.
    • Help with developing media relations skills to further your affiliate advocacy efforts.
    • Help with writing legislative language for future activities.
    • Help with sending advocacy messages to ASRT members
    • Advocacy Academy module access
    • RT in state capitol planning
    • Strategic planning for advocacy campaigns
    • Other items related to strengthening affiliate advocacy efforts (assistance in getting RTs in the state interested in participating in advocacy activities; development of a legislative committee)

      Out of scope: lobbyist expenses, individual travel for affiliate members to meet with lawmakers/regulators, stipends, retreat.

      Ad hoc affiliate assistance will be provided as needed to respond to immediate, unplanned, unexpected legislative needs. This type of “response” assistance will not be eligible for financial assistance, but will have access to email blasts, consultative services and assistance with messaging. All response-based activities will be logged and tracked.

      Out of scope – video or commercial development, paying for staffing or management company, paying for tax liability or legal costs.

    • Leadership Academy Participation
    • Website best practice information
    • Parliamentarian review of documents
    • Help with streamlining processes
    • Board training
    • Office equipment purchasing
    • Software recommendations
  4. Affiliate Financial Assistance Program guidance and support
    • Help with policy development
    • Assistance with insurance

Why should affiliates participate in the program?

ASRT is committed to developing strong affiliates. This program will help affiliate leaders learn how to identify issues, develop plans to address the issues and establish mechanisms for measuring the success of the plans. This program is facilitated by ASRT staff and focuses on optimizing the affiliate's resources in a way that builds an aligned, engaged and diverse affiliate membership.

What are the expectations and responsibilities for participation in the program?

Affiliate leaders will be asked to participate in a survey of affiliate leaders. Additionally, they must sign an agreement to participate in implementing the affiliate action plan developed as part of the Affiliate Development Program. Participating affiliates are required to provide ASRT with documentation verifying that the action plan has been implemented and the affiliate has established a mechanism to measure the success of the action plan.

What does the affiliate need to do to apply for the program?

Review the application, policy and terms of agreement. In addition, the ASRT strongly recommends that affiliate leaders discuss why they want to participate in the program. To complete the application process, download the form and fill it out completely. The application must be completed by the current affiliate president. The new combined program will be based on the ASRT fiscal year Oct. 1 through Sept 30.  A new application must be submitted each fiscal year. During the inaugural year, applications will be accepted up to December 1, 2016.
