The American Society of Radiologic Technologists will award Life Member status to one member and bestow the status of Fellow on four members during the ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting in Las Vegas, June 23-26, 2016.
The Society’s newest Life Member is James Temme, M.P.A., R.T.(R)(QM),FASRT. Fellows are Robert Adams, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(T), CMD; Michael Grey, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(MR)(CT); Stephanie Johnston, M.S.R.S., R.T.(R)(M)(BD)(BS); and Jeffrey Legg, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(CT)(QM).
Temme is the 30th ASRT member to be elevated to Life Member status. Established in 1938, Life Members are active ASRT members who have maintained continuous membership for at least 30 years and have participated in a wide range of volunteer activities that demonstrate dedication to the ASRT and the radiologic technology profession. Candidates who receive the honor are selected by at least a three-quarters vote of the ASRT Board of Directors.
Temme is director and Charles R. O’Malley chair in the Division of Radiation Science Technology Education, College of Allied Health Professions, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. An ASRT member since 1973, Temme has led the Society as president and chairman of the Board of Directors, and served on several other task forces, committees and commissions. He is a Life Member of the Nebraska Society of Radiologic Technologists and a Fellow of the ASRT and the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences. Temme has a strong research background and information about his studies has been published, presented and exhibited in journals and conferences in the United States and abroad. In addition, he has been recognized for his professional volunteer service to the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team and is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.
The ASRT established the honorary Fellow category in 1956 to recognize members who have made outstanding contributions to the profession and to ASRT. Fellows have volunteered in leadership positions at the national and local levels, written articles for publication, presented at professional meetings and helped advance the radiologic science profession.
Dr. Adams is an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and is a prolific author and editor. He has published peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and authored eight book chapters. He has served as an editor for Canada’s Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences and for the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists’ journal, Medical Dosimetry. He also is an AAMD Fellow. For the ASRT, he served nine years on the Radiation Therapist Editorial Review Board. He is a recipient of the ASRT’s Jean Widger Distinguished Author Award and has twice been honored with the Harold Silverman Distinguished Author Award.
Dr. Grey is an associate professor in the School of Allied Health at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is the co-author of three textbooks and numerous scholarly articles. He has served on the certification board examination committee and as a certification board item writer for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and as a site visitor for the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. As an ASRT volunteer, he has served as a conference lecturer, chapter delegate and committee member and chairman.
Johnston is director of the Breast Center of Texoma, in Wichita Falls, Texas, and has served on the mammography exam committee and as an item writer for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. She has held the roles of president and chairman for the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists and the New Mexico Society of Radiologic Technologists. She is a contributing author and subject matter expert for the ASRT Breast Imaging Basics online educational series and has presented dozens of professional development lectures. As an ASRT member, she has served twice as chairman of the Mammography Chapter, twice on the Mammography Practice Standards subcommittee and in numerous other volunteer capacities.
Dr. Legg is chair of the Department of Radiation Sciences in the School of Allied Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been published in professional and scientific journals, written chapters for textbooks, and lectured nationally and internationally. He has served on the registered radiologist assistant certification board examination committee and as a certification board item writer for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. He is a recipient of the ASRT’s Harold Silverman Distinguished Author Award and has twice been honored with the Jean Widger Distinguished Author Award. His ASRT service includes many project groups, committees and boards, and he is a recipient of the International Speakers Exchange Award.
The ASRT membership will honor the recipients at the Honors Evening Event at the annual governance meeting in Las Vegas on June 24.
