ASTRO, ACR Update Practice Guidelines for Radiation Therapy Procedures

Oct 25, 2019

The American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American College of Radiology recently issued updated practice guidelines for medical providers who use radiation therapy to treat patients with cancer.

According to a news release from ASTRO, the seven updated practice parameters combine clinical best practices and recommended procedures and considerations for the safe delivery of radiation for some specific areas of clinical practice.

Three practice parameters were produced by ACR and ASTRO, while an additional four practice parameter documents, were created as a collaborative venture with the American College of Nuclear Medicine, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, the American Brachytherapy Society, the Society for Pediatric Radiology and the Society of Interventional Radiology. The four collaborative practice documents focus on the medical use of specific radioactive resources.

ACR and ASTRO previously issued joint practice parameters for proton beam radiation therapy and radiation oncology in 2018, and for total body irradiation in 2017.

Links to all seven of the new practice parameters may be found online.
