  • What You'll Learn

Digital imaging systems can produce diagnostic-quality images across a wide range of exposure levels. This capability is largely due to the high sensitivity of digital detectors and the processing algorithms that are designed to optimize image appearance. However, consistent image appearance can mask suboptimal techniques and lead to unnecessary radiation exposure to the patient. In addition, inappropriate use of collimation not only affects patient exposure but can also affect image display. Therefore, to ensure optimal image quality while minimizing patient exposure, radiologic technologists must understand the importance of selecting appropriate milliampere and kilovoltage peak settings as well as using proper collimation. This lecture aims to reinforce some key exposure principles and imaging techniques to enhance clinical practice.

    Objectives

After this presentation, the attendee will be able to:

    • Differentiate between detector response range and exposure latitude.
    • Understand the importance of exposure indicators.
    • Explain the effect of milliamperes on image quality and patient exposure.
    • Discuss the importance of proper kilovoltage peak selection.
    • Discuss how collimation affects patient exposure and image display.
