From extra cash in your pocket to the opportunity to travel to your bucket list destination, the ASRT Foundation Annual Drawing has provided winners with incredible prizes to celebrate their dedication and hard work. The drawing also supports scholarship programs and research grants and helps empower medical imaging and radiation therapy students and professionals to achieve their goals.

ASRT members can win three fantastic prizes in this year’s drawing. The grand prize is up to $3,999 for a five-night trip for two to anywhere in the continental U.S., Alaska or Hawaii. The second-place prize is $600, and the third-place prize is $200.

The Honor of Giving Back

Jeff Killion, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(QM), who won a third-place prize in 2020, used the cash toward his second job: growing wheat and raising cattle in Texas, which he described as “not for the faint of heart.”

Dr. Killion also serves as the dean of the Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services at Midwestern State University. Earlier in his academic career, he received a $1,000 scholarship from the Foundation, which he said was incredibly significant to him.

“It’s one of the reasons I give back to the Foundation each year — to say thank you and to help create that same sense of joy and opportunity for someone else,” he said. “Giving back is truly an honor.”

Prioritizing Family Time

The grand prize winner in 2022 was Suzzette Spencer, R.R.A., R.T.(R)(CT), who used the cash winnings to take a Caribbean cruise with her husband and their two children.

Suzzette is a radiologist assistant based in Texas and said winning the prize carried a deeper meaning. “It gave us permission to pause and truly prioritize family time,” she said. “In the midst of demanding schedules and professional responsibilities, that can be incredibly hard to do.”

Suzzette continues to purchase tickets for the Annual Drawing because she said it’s a way to give back and help create opportunities for others in the profession. “It did so much for our family,” she said, “and I love knowing it can do the same for someone else.”

Beach Break

Nancy Fagan, M.Ed., R.T.(R)(T), CMD, won the second-place cash prize in 2023 and used it to help fund a family trip to Pensacola Beach, Florida. She brought her dog, Loki, and said it was a welcome break from her everyday routine.

Nancy has worked as a medical dosimetrist at the same cancer center in Mississippi for more than 28 years. She said that she continues to buy tickets each year for the drawing “because it is a fun way to give, and who knows — maybe one day I'll win that grand prize trip.”
