The ASRT Foundation has awarded two traditional research grants in the amount of $25,000 to two investigative groups at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.
Principal investigator Clodagh Starrs, M.Sc., Pg.C., Therapeutic Radiographer, along with co‑investigators Maria Dimopoulos, Ph.D., R.T.(T), Alex Ashley, B.P.S., R.T.(R)(T), Samantha Skubish, M.S., R.T.(R)(T), Katherine Lynch, B.S., R.T.(T), and Danielle McDonagh, D.H.Sc., R.T.(T), has been awarded $25,000 in funding for their research project titled:
“A Prospective Observational Survey Study Exploring Inpatients Receiving Radiation Therapy at a Single Academic Medical Institution.”
Starrs is an advanced practice radiation therapist at Mount Sinai Hospital, with more than 20 years of clinical and leadership experience in the field of radiation oncology. She earned her bachelor’s degree in therapeutic radiography from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and a master’s degree in advanced clinical practice in Radiation Oncology from Sheffield Hallam University in South Yorkshire, England.
Starrs is recognized nationally as a leader in advancing the advanced practice radiation therapist role in the United States and contributes to international committees dedicated to expanding and supporting APRT practice. Her scholarly work has been published in several peer‑reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (Red Journal), Technical Innovations & Patient Support in Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapist.

In addition, principal investigator Maria Dimopoulos, Ph.D., R.T.(T), along with co‑investigators Clodagh Starrs, M.Sc., Pg.C., Therapeutic Radiographer, and Melanie Clarkson, M.Sc., Pg.CE., PFHEA, has been awarded $25,000 for their research project titled:
“Developing a Skills Acquisition Framework for Advanced Practice Radiation Therapists.”
Dr. Dimopoulos is an assistant professor in radiation oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She leads radiation therapy and medical dosimetry programs and supports clinical staff in professional development and research. Dr. Dimopoulos supports the ASRT Advanced Practice Radiation Therapy think tank, serves as delegate for the ASRT Radiation Therapy Chapter and leads the ASRT Foundation Research Grants and Advisory Panel. She also serves on the editorial review boards for Technical Innovations and Patient Support in Radiation Oncology, Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences and Radiation Therapist.
