Licensure Bill Introduced in Alabama

Jan 16, 2018

Alabama Sen. Gerald Dial has introduced Senate Bill 83 in the Alabama Senate, a measure that would establish licensure requirements for personnel who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures.

SB 83 would create the Alabama Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Board. The board will develop education, certification and competency standards for radiographers, magnetic resonance technologists, nuclear medicine technologists, radiation therapists, limited x-ray machine operators and radiologist assistants.

SB 83 has been referred to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee for consideration.

Alabama is among of four states and the District of Columbia with no educational or competency assessment standards in place for radiographers. The ASRT and the Alabama Society of Radiologic Technologists support the adoption of SB 83.
