EPA Issues Standards for Federal Facilities

Jan 29, 2015
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued updated radiation protection guidelines for federal facilities that perform diagnostic and interventional x-ray procedures.

The voluntary guidelines outline recommendations to keep patient dose as low as reasonably achievable without compromising the quality of patient care.

Developed by the EPA’s Interagency Steering Committee on Radiation Standards workgroup, the guidelines are not binding, but, at an agency’s discretion, “may be incorporated as a whole or in part into their standard operating procedures or orders,” wrote the EPA. In addition, the EPA “hopes that the states and the private sector will find this guidance to be a useful reference.”

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists submitted comments on the proposed document during the open comment period in April 2013. However, not all of ASRT’s comments were accepted and incorporated into the final document.
