Legislation intended to eliminate a key component of West Virginia’s longstanding radiologic technology licensure laws has been defeated thanks to the quick action of the West Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists and ASRT.

House Bill 3034 would have terminated the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board on June 30, 2022, if it had been enacted. An urgent call to action from WVSRT generated significant opposition to the bill, and members of the West Virginia Legislature heard from many R.T.s who opposed H.B. 3034. After an overwhelming response, Delegate Brandon Steele agreed to not to proceed with moving the bill through the legislative process.

West Virginia was only the eighth state in U.S. history to recognize the hazards posed by exposure to radiation and implement a licensure program that would provide oversight of medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals. West Virginia’s licensing board has been in operation for 40 years and protects patients by ensuring medical imaging and radiation therapy educational programs meet accreditation standards and making sure that radiographers, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine technologists, magnetic resonance technologists and fusion imaging professionals meet the state’s rigorous licensure standards.
