This study was to determine if problems existed in the form and application of the clinical competency evaluation process of a Radiologic Technology Program. Answers were sought regarding whether evaluators uniformly applied objectives, actually observed students perform the objectives, believed the evaluation form adequately measured the objectives, and whether evaluators had adequate training in methods of observation and evaluation. The literature review demonstrated a need to assess methods to ensure reliability in the clinical competency evaluation process. The assessment involved data collected via questionnaires from three groups of the Bakersfield College Radiologic Technology Program: second-year students, staff radiologic technologists, and clinical instructors. The data demonstrated inconsistencies in application of the evaluation process, possible need for revision of the evaluation form, and a need for further training of evaluators. Recommendations included providing training to evaluators, assessing and possibly revising forms, and only allowing trained evaluators to test students.
