ASRT Diversity Leadership Development Program

Applications for the Diversity Leadership Development Program will open in spring 2024.

The medical imaging and radiation therapy profession is a remarkably diverse and vibrant community, and the same is true of the membership of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. To carry on our tradition of inclusivity and fulfill our mission for the entire medical imaging and radiation therapy community, the ASRT is proud to announce the Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP). This new program will continually and systematically work to ensure all of our members’ voices are being heard at the leadership level.

Program Goals

Inspire a new generation of leaders to take part in ASRT’s governance structure.
Bring together members of all backgrounds to drive creativity and innovation in the field of radiologic technology.
Build relationships among our members to spread ideas and solutions to care for our diverse patient populations.

Program Events

DLDP participants will join the following meetings to learn through participation, observation, and mentorship.

ASRT Leadership Academy

A six-week course in which participants learn principles of leadership and association management.

ASRT Commission

A governance committee which recommends disposition of main motions at the Commission Open Forum and in a report presented at the Annual Governance and House of Delegates meeting.

Committee on RT Advocacy

A committee that works with regional networks to collect and disseminate legislative information. This effort is too large to include in its entirety, but attending at least one meeting will give participants a deeper understanding of advocacy as a component of association leadership.

Annual Governance and House of Delegates meeting

The annual meeting of the ASRT where elected members debate and vote on motions and proposed changes to the ASRT Bylaws, as well as clinical practice and educational standards.

In addition, there will be two meetings scheduled exclusively for DLDP participants and mentors.

Orientation

Once program participants have been selected, a brief virtual orientation will be conducted to review the structure of the program and encourage active participation.

Capstone

To celebrate completion of the program, a capstone event will be held at AGHOD. This event will include distribution of completion certificates and remarks by leaders from the ASRT Board of Directors and staff.

Leadership Experience: The goal of the program is to cultivate new ideas, consider new perspectives, and develop new leaders, so program participants with less experience are included rather than seasoned leaders. Applicants must not have held elected office with the ASRT or an ASRT Affiliate, nor served as an ASRT committee chair.
Professional Experience: A key qualification for leadership in the profession is practical experience as an R.T. in the field or in leadership positions. Applicants must have at least 5 years of work experience in medical imaging or radiation therapy.
Work Environment: To ensure the entire profession is heard, participants will be selected from a variety of modalities within the medical imaging and radiation therapy profession, as well as different geographic regions and types of imaging facilities.
ASRT Membership: To ensure the program enhances the diversity of future leadership at ASRT, applicants must have demonstrated commitment to the organization by maintaining membership for at least 3 consecutive years.
Affiliate Membership: Many leadership opportunities exist within the ASRT affiliate structure, and applicants must hold a current affiliate membership.
Diversity: Diversity comes in many forms: age, gender, race, culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and physical ability, just to name a few. There is no exhaustive list of qualities that define diversity, and so applicants will be considered based on their own experiences. Applicants will be asked to write a short paragraph explaining their candidacy for this program, and the unique perspectives and experiences they will bring to ASRT’s leadership.
Motivation: Most of the program involves participation in ASRT leadership activities, so applicants must demonstrate interest in volunteer leadership at ASRT. Applicants will be asked to write an additional paragraph explaining their motivation to engage with the program.

Leadership Experience: The goal of this program, and mentoring, is to introduce participants to the leadership of ASRT. Program mentors must have held elected office or chaired a committee within the ASRT governance structure.

Commitment to Diversity: A vital part of mentoring in the DLDP is a personal commitment to diversity, and recognition of the importance of diversity in leadership. Applicants will be asked to write an additional paragraph explaining their commitment to the goals of the program.
ASRT Membership: To adequately introduce participants to the many leadership opportunities within the ASRT governance structure, mentors must hold a current ASRT membership.
Experience with the DLDP: Experiencing the DLDP as a participant is an excellent way to prepare to mentor future leaders. Alumni of the program in ASRT and affiliate leadership positions are encouraged to return as mentors for future participants.
