The ASRT Online Advocacy Academy gives ASRT members the opportunity to learn how to affect positive change in the standards and regulations guiding the profession, as well as the skills they will need to protect the profession against future perils.


This 10-week course is designed to help participants:

  • Promote, enhance and defend the profession’s standards by developing skills to navigate the legislative and regulatory process.
  • Work toward a leadership position on their affiliate’s board and strengthen their affiliate society’s advocacy and media relations skills.
  • Develop personal advocacy and organizational skills.

Course Topics

The ASRT Online Advocacy Academy (OLAA) is moderated through a private group established in the ASRT Communities. Learning takes place through online-narrated learning modules, discussion posts, conference calls and hands-on projects.

Module 1
Who and What Makes a Good Advocate?

 July 10 - 16, 2022

Objectives:
  • Identify advocacy development opportunities for affiliate societies.
  • Identify skills that individuals may already have to assist them in becoming strong advocates for the profession.
  • Develop skills to help make fellow R.T.s, patients and employers aware of professional issues.
  • Enhance the visibility of the profession and affiliate societies in the health care community.

Strategic Planning for Advocacy Efforts

 July 17 - 23, 2022

  • Learn strategic plan development and management.
  • Set goals and benchmark progress.
    • SWOT analysis.
    • Strategic planning tools.

Module 3
Researching the Issues and the Legalities of Lobbying

  • Elements of researching legal standards.
  • Statutes and regulations.

  • State lobbying, filing and reporting.
  • Hiring and managing a lobbyist.

Module 4
Working With Change Leaders

  • Message development and creating opportunities for the public to become involved.

Telling Your Advocacy Story To Get Others Involved

Module 6
Sustaining the Effort

 August 28 – September 3, 2022

  • Identify issues and trends and refresh your long-term advocacy strategic plan.
  • Learn methods for attracting new advocacy volunteers.
  • Develop an advocacy volunteer succession plan.
  • Budget for long-term affiliate advocacy efforts.
